If you are a developer or IT/Network Engineer then you must be and should be familiar with command prompt instructions. In this article we will discuss about 5 windows cmd commands you must know.

Ping (Example: ping www.google.com)

One of the most important cmd instruction is ping. This is used to check reachability. You can find out latency and TTL(time-to-live).

Tracert (Example: tracert www.google.com)

This is used for tracing route. If you want to check route of your destination then you can trace your destination ip so that you can find out if you are getting any request timeout error or not.

After doing trace you become certain which hop is faulty and then you can consult with your ISP to optimize your route for better latency. Due to some security reasons we are not attaching tracert command results.

IPConfig (Example: ipconfig)

This is normally used to check your IP, gateway and subnet settings. Due to some security reasons we are not attaching ipconfig command results.

Getmac (Example: getmac)

Getmac is used to check your mac address which is also known as physical address or BIA address.

DIR (Example: dir)

This is used to check directories in any folder or drive.
